The North Borneo Papers is an independent historical advocacy project.
Sources and method
Substantive claims link to identified sources. Source records give the author or issuing authority, publication details, relevant pages and available reading copies. They identify editions, translations and documentary reprints where those distinctions matter.
Our subject is Sulu’s historical domain. Sabah’s present-day administration is Malaysian.
Image and film credits
The coastal landscape and museum backdrop are decorative illustrations generated with GPT Image 2. The maps, collection objects and historical photographs are credited to their publishers and repositories on their individual records. The explainer uses a synthetic narrator.
The Sulu Archipelago map appears in Saleeby’s 1908 book. The Stanford Borneo map and Jolo photograph come from the Library of Congress. The Jolo kris belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Rights information is recorded with each source.

The chronology uses a consistent series of contemporary oil-style illustrations generated with GPT Image 2 through Higgsfield. Captions identify the places and subjects; the Sultan’s portrait follows the Montano and Rey likeness.
