The British Crown took over North Borneo. The transfer agreement traced the Company’s asserted rights back to earlier grants and commissions. For the Sulu claim, the central question remained what those instruments had actually conveyed—not simply who now administered the territory.
What passed from the Company to the Crown?
After the Second World War, Britain replaced Company government with Crown administration. The transfer’s opening recitals trace the Company’s claimed rights to earlier instruments. For the Sulu case, the question is therefore what those instruments conveyed before the Company could pass its rights onward.
Why this record matters
The recitals carry the chain of grants and commissions into the Crown’s acquisition. They identify the transaction whose effect on Sulu’s asserted title became a later point of contention.
